DKDBDer Regisseur Luk Perceval glaubt daran, dass das Theater immer eine Berechtigung haben wird. Ein Statement gegen die Befürchtung der Bedeutungslosigkeit der darstellenden Kunst – das leistet das Buch „Die Kunst der Bühne. Positionen des zeitgenössischen Theaters“. Im von Marion Tiedtke und Philipp Schulte herausgegebenen Band aus der Recherchen-Reihe von Theater der Zeit sind Beiträge zur Entwicklung des deutschen Theater der letzten Jahrzehnte gesammelt. Die Darstellungsformen selbst und das Wirkpotenzial theatraler Mittel sowie ein neu definiertes Verhältnis zum Publikum sind in den Mittelpunkt gerückt. Dass auf heutigen Bühnen kaum mehr reines Texttheater zu sehen ist, liegt an der Entwicklung, die seit etwa 1970 von einer Reihe von Avantgardisten angestoßen und von Vielen aufgenommen und weitergebracht wurde. „Die Kunst der Bühne“ enthält Vorträge und Selbstauskünfte von Künstlern, die im Rahmen einer Ringvorlesung an der Hessischen Theaterakademie entstanden sind. Im ersten Teil beschreiben Regisseure, Bühnebildner, Theaterautoren ihre eigene Arbeit und die Überzeugungen, die dahinter stehen. Den zweiten Teil des Buches bestreitet die Theaterwissenschaft mit Reflexionen künstlerischer (Ausnahme-)Positionen.

Der Anzahl der Erwähnungen nach, sind Robert Wilson und Einar Schleef die prägenden Figuren der jüngeren Theatergeschichte. Hier wird schon deutlich, was die Auswahl beeinflusst haben mag: Absolut prägnante, subjektive Ästhetiken und Arbeitsweisen.

Es gibt Artikel über Pina Bausch, René Pollesch, Michael Thalheimer, Texte von Choreografen, Schauspielern und Dramaturgen. So wird anschaulich, was das Theater zu leisten im Stande ist, wenn auch vieles von dem, was hier beschrieben wird, aus der Zuschauerperspektive womöglich schwer entzifferbar bleibt. Wenn man sich eigentlich sicher sein kann, meistens etwas Entscheidendes verpasst zu haben, kann man in diesem Band nachlesen, wo die Theatermacher ihre eigene Arbeit verorten beziehungsweise wie viel die Analyse darin zu finden vermag. „Die Kunst der Bühne“ ist eine Sammlung von Einzelpositionen, wie ein Speed-Dating mit siebzehn Lebens- und Arbeitsentwürfen. Hier liegt keine umfassende Anthologie mit abschließender Auswahl vor, sondern ein Stöberbuch für Leser, die an Künstlerpersönlichkeiten generell und Bühnenkunst im Speziellen interessiert sind. Im Sinne Luk Percevals, der schreibt: „Auch wenn die anderen Medien und Kommunikationsmittel in Zukunft noch raffinierter werden, bleibt die Sehnsucht nach einer wirklichen Begegnung immer universell menschlich, und schon deshalb glaube ich, dass das Theater immer eine absolute Berechtigung haben wird“, kann man hier die Begegnung mit denen suchen, die sich mit Herz und Kopf dem Theater verschrieben haben.
