Literaturgeschichte als Geschichte

NDLPeter J. Brenner legt die dritte Auflage der Neueren deutschen Literaturgeschichte. Von Ackermann bis Günther Grass vor. Die zweite Auflage war erst 2004 bei Niemeyer erschienen; andere Verlage sind nicht minder emsig damit beschäftigt, ähnliche Titel immer wieder aufzulegen. Man kann daher fragen, inwiefern sich die aktuelle Ausgabe von Peter J. Brenner von den zahlreichen Alternativen und auch von ihrer Vorgängerin unterscheidet.

Strukturell folgt die dritte Ausgabe dem Muster der beiden vorangegangenen. Ohne Illustrationen, Merkkästen oder Glossen konzentriert sich Brenner darauf, Literaturgeschichte zu erzählen. Statt handlicher Informationshäppchen entspinnt er die deutsche Literaturgeschichte im Stil einer verwobenen Narration, was sicher deren komplexen Zusammenhängen entspricht, dem Lern- und Leseverhalten prüfungsgeplagter Studierender allerdings weniger entgegenkommt. Die oft elaborierten Satzkonstruktionen hätten passagenweise ein liebevolleres Lektorat verdient.

Für alle, die den Luxus der Muße haben, bietet das Buch allerdings umfassende historische Hintergrundinformationen, die die Entwicklung der deutschen Literatur ab 1400 in einen gesamtgesellschaftlichen Kontext stellen und nicht nur Phänomene innerhalb der Literatur ins Verhältnis zueinander setzen. Zahlreich sind in diesem Zusammenhang auch die Verweise auf einflussreiche Publikationen, die sich an der Grenze oder jenseits des Feldes der Literatur bewegen. Die heikle Frage, was der Gegenstand einer Literaturgeschichte sei, wird so zumindest implizit erkennbar. Brenner orientiert sich strukturell an der klassischen Epochengliederungen, beginnend mit der Frühen Neuzeit über Barock, Aufklärung, Romantik und Moderne bis hin zur noch in Entwicklung befindlichen Berliner Republik. Thematisiert werden in erster Linie kanonische Autoren, gelegentlich werden vermeintliche Außenseiter hervorgehoben. Die detaillierte und differenzierte Darstellung lässt auch die Grenzen der Epochenkategorisierung erkennen, ohne diese jedoch explizit anzusprechen oder zu hinterfragen.

Leider wird auch das Modell Literaturgeschichte selbst nicht problematisiert. Gerade in einem Studienbuch wären einführende Bemerkungen zum Wesen der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung, wie sie sich z.B. in einer Literaturgeschichte aus dem Narr-Verlag von 2008 einleitend finden lassen, sicher hilfreich gewesen. Die Bibliografie ist dagegen erfreulich umfangreich und detailliert und bietet im Vergleich mit anderen Literaturgeschichten eine bemerkenswerte Anzahl aktueller Forschungstitel. (Luzia Goldmann)
